Fluid at the macula blurs reading. Damage often begins years before any symptom. Cataracts are also more common with diabetes and can hide the retina — that is a reason to keep screening even if blur ‘feels like glasses’. Pregnancy can worsen retinopathy. Type 1 commonly starts around age 12; type 2 from diagnosis. Ask how screening works where you live if you have never been invited. - Type 1 diabetes: from around age 12 (or earlier if advised), then as invited - Type 2 diabetes: from diagnosis, then as invited - More frequent review if changes are found or pregnancy is planned - Keep glucose and blood pressure controlled between appointments with your diabetes team — we do not set your HbA1c target here ## Why attend when vision feels normal Screening photographs the retina and spots changes before you notice anything, when treatment is most effective.
